Profit First is a version of the "envelope system," which I saw my mom use to maximum wizardry growing up, a way of budgeting for all important categories of expenses with cash stuffed in envelopes.
Michalowicz's is a model adapted for business that can be integrated with accounting software and bank accounts. You start safely and conservatively with category percentage allotments and tweak monthly or quarterly until you land on a division of money that's ideal for your business. Ideal always allows for profit, paycheck, expenses, and setting aside money for taxes as you go.
As an example, after years of tweaking, here are the allotments I use in my business, how much I set aside from each week’s income for the different categories of money I manage:
Self/Paycheck: 50%
Profit: 5%
Tax set aside: 8%
Paycheck: 37%
Expenses: 50%
Contractors and employees: 33%
Other expenses: 17%
