The Grind of Authorship, the Doing of Reps. Your ABC Nudge, vol. 68

Do 5 Things a Day.

Dear Authors,

It's the grinding of authorship.

It's doing the reps.

Grinding in video games is an act of endurance and discipline—repeatedly performing boring, repetitive tasks to gain in-game rewards like experience points, currency, or stats upgrades.

Grinding is the doing the reps of working out. Commitment. Discipline. Repetitive. Boring. And somewhere, sometime, eventually…seeing, enjoying, and then, maintaining, the results.

Doing 5 things a day, every day, to promote your books, your expertise, your authorship, and/or your author business is the grinding and doing the reps of author success.

  • It requires commitment.
  • It requires discipline.
  • It requires just doing it.

It might be repetitive in that you should be doing it every day, but here’s the good thing about 5 things a day…

  • It doesn’t have to be—shouldn’t be—the same thing every day.
  • It doesn’t have to be boring. You can do what you like (especially if it’s working).
  • You can mix it up…just for fun, just to experiment, just because you’re in business for yourself and that freedom is yours.

So, accept the grind.

Do the reps.

Collect the in-game rewards, currency, and stats upgrades...of being an author.

A Magnificence Checklist. "One can live magnificently in this world, if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work."—Leo Tolstoy It’s true. I do live magnificently for loving books, loving work, and working for the authors who make that possible. So, merci beaucoup. But living magnificently, for me, has also come from taking on the challenges and long-game journey of entrepreneurship. It’s ongoing self-development and real-world engagement,...

Cue the chuckle, the moan and groan, the despair. But wait! Hello author friends, Since my book with the Profitable Author title came out a month ago, more than one person has suggested to me that profitable author is an oxymoron. Har. Har. Yes, that’s hilarious. Let me have a quick chuckle then get back to moaning, groaning, and despairing with you… It’s so oxymoronic I wrote a 500-page book on the topic just to twist the knife in further. Haha. Just kidding. I’m used to the skepticism and...
